What Polaroids Mean to Me

Polaroids are one of my favorite things in the world. I have a plethora hanging up on my wall in my bedroom, depicting my favorite memories: my 18th birthday dinner as a college freshman, celebrating surrounded by a newfound group of friends who changed my life; film sets during that same semester when I was studying cinematic arts, an enriching and transformative period of my life that I’ll always cherish; a bookstore that I went to with a friend who now lives far away, but whose positive impact on my life will forever stay; a day trip on my first visit to Ikea almost a year ago with my coworkers, a day filled with the most laughter, my newly discovered love for Swedish food, and imaginative play as we pretended to live in the rooms on display; a classroom with my best friends after completing a project we poured our hearts into.

From milestones, to everyday events, the polaroids in my room are a daily reminder that something exciting, adventurous, fun, and heartwarming could be right around the corner without even knowing it. They remind me that even when seasons in life change, and some friendships don’t last forever, while others last a lifetime, there is still joy in the memories, in the moments captured on film that can never be rewritten. And even when some friendships end or people drift away, new ones come with those I never expected. Waking up everyday with the anticipation of something wonderful on the horizon makes even the mundane and routine feel exciting, knowing that everyday is an opportunity to make a lasting memory.
